It is a rich source of fibre and helps in weight loss.It is used prevent and treat kidney stones.

Steps to Clean  Banana Stem/ Valaithandu
Add the chopped banana stem to a bowl of Rice water, to prevent the banana stem from colorization. Take a stick,immerse it into the rice water and gently move it in a rotating motion. Once you pull out the stick outside, you will see some fiber sticking to the stick. Remove the fiber and repeat the process for 2-3 times.

   Ingredients :


    Banana stem fry /Valaithandu poriyal
  1. Banana Stem /Valaithandu - 1 cup  (Finely Chopped)
  2. Moong Dal - 1/4 cup
  3. Shallots - 1/4 cup
  4. Garlic - 5 nos
  5. Red chilli powder - 2 tbsp
  6. Turmeric Powder - a pinch 
  7. Coconut - 4 tbsp ( Grated)
  8. Few Curry Leaves (Chopped)

   For Tempering :

  1. Mustard Seeds  - 1/4 tbsp
  2. Chana dal - 1/2 tbsp
  3. Urad dal - 1/2 tbsp

   Steps:

  1. Heat a pan add 1/2 cup of water , add 1/4 cup of moong dal , add 1 cup of chopped banana stem, then add 5 garlic finely chopped , allow them to boil for 10 minutes .
  2. Strain the water.
  3. Heat a pan add 4 tbsp of oil, add 1/4 tbsp of mustard seeds, add  1/2 urad dal, add 1/2 chana dal  fry for 2 seconds.
  4. Add  shallots , and few curry leaves fry for 5 minutes.
  5. Add  2 tbsp of red chilli powder, a pinch of turmeric powder, add the banana stem fry for 5 minutes.
  6. Finally add 4 tbsp of grated  coconut and  some fresh curry leaves.
